Light of the World
John 9:1-4 ESV
“As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.”
Explanation:
The disciples thought that this man, who had been born blind, had a cause and effect. Sin must have been present which caused his blindness. Of course, that was not true. His blindness happened, and God saw down in history where His Son would heal Him.
The Blind man’s cause and effect was the object lesson, but the greater lesson would come through Jesus’s statement; “We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.”
First, Jesus said (WE) must work the works of God, not just Jesus but also Jesus in us.
Second, working while it is day can be seen in different lights. Working while we have the opportunity, working while we are still here in the world, working while the Spirit of God is in the world, all are relevant.
Third, the night that is coming can be seen in different measures. We know that darkness has overcome this world, but our work certainly doesn’t end because of that darkness. No, our work should be more fervent because of the impending darkness.
Jesus said that “the night is coming, when no one can work,” that didn’t mean when He left the work ended. More so, we have the opportunity to work until His Spirit is withdrawn from this wicked world. Working while His light is in us because the darkness will come, and the work is over.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to work tirelessly for You until the time when all things will end on this earth, and we are taken home to be with You forever. We know that every minute counts, and that there are millions of souls to be won. Give us strength, power and anointing to work for You while it is still day. In Your name Lord, Amen!
