God is the Righteous Judge of All Hearts
Matthew 13:24-26, 29-30 NIV
“Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven (same as the Kingdom of God) is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ “‘No,’ he (the farmer) answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.”
This will help explain the story line: Bearded Darnel is a weed that mimics wheat. When it is a young plant, it is almost impossible to distinguish it from wheat. As it grows, it’s roots intertwine with the wheat and make it difficult to uproot without losing the grain, too. If a rival farmer wanted to hamstring another, he would come and sow darnel in another’s field.
Here is the meaning of the story; Leave the judging up to God.
Jesus is describing the kingdom of God. Jesus is sowing the gospel throughout the world and making disciples of the Kingdom. At the same time, the enemy is in the world spreading counterfeit messages to confuse people. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the differences between those that belong in the kingdom and those who do not belong in the Kingdom.
Sometimes the servants (you and me) wanted to assist the farmer by uprooting the imposters, but we lack the sensitivity of the angelic harvesters (at the end of time). It’s not the job of the servants to make judgment calls of who is and who is not a part of the kingdom. Our job is to spread the good seed of the gospel, to be a witness for Him.
Prayer:
Lord, help me not to be judgemental. My duty is to be a sower of your word, a disciple maker, and one who builds the Kingdom with Your words. In Your name Lord I ask, AMEN!
