More Understanding of the Things of God

Mark 4:21-24 ESV
“He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”

“Consider carefully what you hear,” He continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. Jesus is talking about His parables in verses 21-23. The light is the truth of God. Parables would disclose the true message in actions. Jesus could not speak the plain truth of God to the common people because they would not understand, so He used stories.

I sat in church as a child and understood very little of what was being preached. But when I went to Sunday School the lessons were taught with illustrations, flannel graphs, and colorful leaflets. Some sit in church as adults and they do not understand everything, but they can grasp concepts and especially illustrations or stories that the Pastor offers.

Jesus says in verse 24, “Consider carefully what you hear,” He continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.” In other words, listen to understand completely. If you will understand the message of the Bible, don’t just listen to the Pastor, study it for yourself, get a good commentary, look at several translations, you will understand the message more completely.

Given that explanation, if we go back to verse 24, it says, “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.” As you understand the message, you will be fed more by God and His words because your understanding has increased.

Prayer:
Father God, give us the ability to concentrate and understand the messages that we read in Your word. I thank You that when we do receive and we do come to an understanding, You will feed us more in Your word. Thank you Father, AMEN!
