The Resurrection and the Life

John 11:25-27
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,  and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Jesus’s statement is beautiful but unless we break it down it may appear confusing. Jesus was claiming to be the source of both life and the resurrection. There is no resurrection apart from Christ. He is life, and therefore death has no ultimate power over Him. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” He or she who believes on Jesus and confesses their sins and excepts Him as Lord and Savior, will live even though they die.

Martha believed that the resurrection was an event; Jesus showed her (and us) that the resurrection is a Person. Martha’s knowledge of eternal life was an abstract idea; Jesus proved that knowledge of eternal life is a personal relationship. She thought victory over death was a future expectation; Jesus corrects her, showing that victory is a present reality.

We will die a physical death meaning this body will die, but our spirit will live on to be with Him forever. So to finish Jesus’s statement, the one that believes in Jesus will never die, a spiritual death.

The real me and the real you are spirits. This body is just a temporary dwelling that will one day die, but our spirit lives on with Him forever. Don’t fear death, we serve the Risen Savior, to be abscent from the body is to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8)

Prayer:
Lord, I will not fear death because You are the source of life and the resurrection. Even though I walk through that valley of death, I will fear no evil, You are with me all the way to glory! In Your name Lord, Amen.
