Matthew 26:6-7, 11 ESV
“Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.”
(Jesus told the disciples) “In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial.” Beyond the fact that this was an expensive perfume from a distant land, the act of this women (Mary) took her chances at being put out of the synagogue. She could have been rebuked by the religious right for wasting money, and for taking down her hair to wash Jesus’s feet. She knew what she had to do, and I believe she decided to obey God rather than man.
Jesus praised her for her actions. He said she offered a kiss as was the custom, she kissed His feet, she washed His feet, as was the custom, but most important she anointed His head for His burial. Mission accomplished, thank you Mary for obeying God rather than man.
Prayer:
Father, you move me out of my comfort zone, sometimes you even move me out of the establishment. Most of all Father, I want to do what you want me to do when I’m supposed to do it. That will bring you praise!
