Respect

Romans 12:10 ESV

“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”

Respect is something that is required from us as Christians to God, but what of the respect that God wants us to give one another. In this passage Paul states that we should “outdo one another in showing them honor, (Romans 12:10b).” This principle is stated by Jesus in these words, “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them… (Matthew 7:12a).”

Unfortunately, we draw respect from our own definitions; not everyone shows respect in the same manner. For true respect to emerge, selflessness has to engage. Drop preconceived notions about someone, forgive the past offenses and forget, or at least stop rehearsing the matter of the offense over and over again. People are human, they make mistakes, they act according to their own minds, we are to treat them as we would want to be treated.

I respect God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, because they deserve it. I respected my parents, although I did not see how they respected their parents. I just did it because I was told to, and I also feared the consequences if I did not. I respect my wife because she deserves it. I respect my friends honestly because it is the right thing to do, and I hope that they reciprocate that respect. I respect strangers although I do not know them because I am supposed to be an example to them.

Prayer:

I cannot demand respect or honor, all I can do is show honor and respect, no matter how others treat me, that is between them and You Lord. My duty as a child of the living God is to forgive as I have been forgiven by You. It is my duty to show love, honor and mercy despite how others treat me. My walk is based on me and You Lord, others do not play a role in how I am in Your sight. My duty and privilege is to honor You in my words and deeds. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
