Mentoring
1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV
“Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”
Paul was a great mentor. Even though he had problems with John Mark’s commitment, towards the end of his life, he reconciled with John Mark. He said this to Timothy, a young man that would be a pastor; “You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
He told Titus; “As for you, Titus, promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching…. You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them. You have the authority to correct them when necessary, so don’t let anyone disregard what you say.” (Titus 2:1,15)
Paul was a mentor, an imitator of Jesus, and one who would pass along sound teachings for others to follow. He told Timothy to find those who he could teach, that would pass along sound wisdom to others.
We never see ourselves as mentors but we are. At work we are showing people how to be diligent and do a good job. In life we live by example, not do as I say do, but do as I do. In ministry we need to live a life of example for others to follow.
Not just our children and grandchildren, but lead by example in the church as well. All our lives we should be saying with our words, actions and manor of life, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”
Prayer:
Lord, help me to live by example for those who follow or perhaps watch the way I live. Teach me to be an imitator of Your life, work and ministry.
