Who Do You Say That I Am?

Mark 8:27-29 ESV

“And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”  And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”  And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”

Jesus was asking his disciples how the people interpreted who He was or how did they see His ministry. In the Spirit of John, calling for repentance. Or did they see Him in the spirit of a prophet, merely proclaiming the Words of God but not actually God in flesh. After asking them about what people thought of Him, He gives them but a moment to digest their own interpretation of His ministry. He allows them to consider the evidence for themselves. Instead of having to come up with their conclusion on their own, they are able to first determine if the other claims fit with what they’ve seen and heard.

The only logical conclusion is the revelation of Peter, “You are the Christ.” Because His ministry was unique, not like others before Him.

If we were asked today who we say that Jesus is, what would our answer be? Do we see Him merely as a historical figure that said a lot of good things? Or do we see Him as a healer as the only answer to every question that we have ever had? Do we see Him as the ONLY way to the Father? Do we see Him as our Redeemer, our conquering hero? Do we see Him as the only one who has the words of eternal life? Do we see Him as the lamb of God who took away all of our sins forever? Do we see Him as the one who will come back and set in order all things? Do we see Him as our all in all?

As for me, He is everything I ever needed or wanted. He has never failed! He is the Messiah, the anointed, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

Prayer:

Lord, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. You are all I need. You hold all the answers to life. You are the All Mighty, the Great I AM. You are all powerful, wonderful and You have conquered every foe. One day every knee will bow to confess You as Lord, but today and every day, I confess You as Lord, Master, and Savior, my King forever! Amen!
