Psalms 4:7-8 ESV
“You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
In David’s time the worldly rejoiced over an abundant harvest. So much so that they would have festivals at harvest time to celebrate their good fortune. Today, the worldly gets excited when they receive money or things, but that joy cannot be compared to the joy that God gives.
His joy cannot be duplicated by good fortune. His joy is not just a joy that makes us happy, it’s a joy the brings contentment, peace and an overwhelming desire to praise the Father. David said that this joy of the Lord was so fulfilling that it gave him peace to rest and be satisfied.
He didn’t just lay down in bed and rehash the day or worry through the night, instead he laid down and fell asleep without disturbance from his thoughts. We use to use the phrase, “I slept like a log, which means I had a solid night sleep without waking up or being restless.
Prayer:
Lord, I pray for everyone reading this devotion today, joy so rich and fulfilling it will bring more joy than things or money can bring. Give them Your kind of joy that brings them peace, contentment, satisfaction and love. So much joy that it gives them sweet sleep tonight.
