Good Sense
Proverbs 19: 8 ESV
“Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good.”
Good sense is hard to come by, it takes consideration, concern, motivation and thirst for something better than foolish rhetoric. Robert Ingersoll wrote; “It is a thousand times better to have good sense without education than to have education without good sense.”
Solomon says that Whoever finds sense, or good sense as we call it, “loves (preserves) his own soul.” (19:8 AMP) If we have good sense we become prominent, effective and prudent members in society and preserve our own lives.
In the church of Jesus Christ, good sense should be the anomaly, especially in a society that is completely out of control.
Solomon wraps this verse up with, “he who keeps understanding will discover good.” Understanding follows intelligence, knowledge, experience, wisdom. To have understanding is to have a firm grasp on attained knowledge and wisdom of greater things. I think education is wonderful and necessary but wisdom and knowledge of the things of God is key for true understanding.
Prayer:
Lord, above all give me understanding of Your will and Your ways and what You desire of me.
