The Narrow Gate
Matthew 7:13-14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
These verses are part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus emphasizes the need for genuine, inner righteousness, rather than following what is easy and popular. The broad road is effortless, typically nonconfrontational. It is accommodating and allows for worldly, self-centered living. The narrow road is challenging, and it demands self-control, discipline, and a commitment to Jesus’ teachings. The narrow path is often equated with following Jesus specifically rather than merely living a good life. Essentially, Jesus is urging listeners to choose the challenging path of following Him, which requires rejecting popularity and selfish desires, rejecting the mainstream view of this life.
Prayer:
Lord, never let us settle. Keep us hungry for more of You. Keep us in the straight and narrow way that may not be popular but it is the way that leads to life eternal with You. In Your name Lord Jesus we ask, Amen.
