Touch the Hem of His Garment
Mark 5: 25-28 NIV
“And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
Desperation that leads to an act of faith meets a great reward. This woman was at her wits end of what to do for herself. Then she heard that Jesus was near, so she set out to see if He could heal her.
As she approached the crowd, she saw that there was no way that she was going to get His attention. So, she determined that if she could not see Jesus face to face, she was going to at least touch his clothes.
Why did she feel that His clothes could actually heal her? Faith spoke in her ear, and it said, “don’t worry about getting His attention, just touch His garment and you will receive what you are looking for.” At that point, she was on a holy determination to touch Jesus, even if it was just His clothes.
I’ve heard this story told a hundred times from ministers that painted it as a slow motion drama. I believe it happened so abruptly, so decisively and quickly it would be more of an action scene instead of a daytime drama. Because desperation gets the adrenaline flowing and it commands action.
What can we take away from this story? (1) That our times of desperation give way to faith in God. (2) That persistence will have its reward. (3) That sheer determination is not always well planned but inspired by the Holy Spirit to move forward!
Prayer:
Lord, in our times of desperation we seek you. In our moments of crises and fear, we choose to reach out in faith and touch You or the hem of Your garment where we will find fulfillment and healing. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
