Nothing to Everything
Matthew 5:1-3 ESV
“Seeing the crowds, He (Jesus) went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him. And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
I know we have read this passage a thousand times but it still amazes me every time I look at it. Jesus sat down with His brand new disciples and starts the greatest teachings ever heard, the things that matter most on how to live in the Kingdom of God.
The first thing He says is blessed is the person that is empty, for that person is primed to receive all that God has for them. Amazing, become completely empty to receive everything you will ever need, that’s a bold statement.
When I went to take my state exam to obtain my Contractors license, I took a class that helped prepare for the exam. After all the exam was 16 hours and covered 16 books. The first thing the instructor said was, “forget everything you know about construction it will not help you on this test. I thought I knew a lot about construction but what was covered on that test was mostly nothing I had ever learned or anything I would ever use.
The concept of emptying myself so this man could teach me what I need to know to take the test seemed foreign but it paid off. I passed the test with the knowledge that man gave to take the exam. Many people sat in those classes and refused to forget past knowledge to get the information that they needed, and according to the records those that refused failed.
What Jesus was teaching in Matthew 5 verse 3 was that concept; forget previous knowledge, empty yourself, and My Father will give you everything, EVERYTHING. Or another way you can look at it, come to me empty, broken, and my Father will fill you up with His goodness.
Prayer:
Father, help me to empty myself so You can fill me up with all that You have for me!
