Unless the Lord Builds the House
Psalms 127:1a
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain…”
Solomon, as a wise builder. He constructed the magnificent temple of the Lord in Jerusalem and his own beautiful palace. He warns in Psalm 127:1 that it is useless to construct a house without depending upon the Lord. It is noteworthy that this passage should also include building a home, which includes building a family.
Solomon built a beautiful Temple for the Lord and a beautiful palace for himself and his family, but because of his many foreign wives and concubines his house was a mess.
Caution should be taken in building a house. The builder needs to know the codes and laws. He needs to have the proper documentations and plans. The builder needs to refer to these documents and plans throughout the building of the house so the house will be strong for many, many years.
So, in building a family, there needs to be careful planning and insight. The husband and wife need to be of one mind and heart. They need to have the Lord as the center of their relationship and marriage. Communication should be open and handled with respect and mutual admiration.
So it should be when having children. Thoughts of how to raise the children should be found in seeking the Lord and His word. Raising the children in the faith and admiration of the Lord,. We should teach them the Bible and how to read the Bible and importance of keeping in a right relationship with God so their days will be blessed and many.
Too often families are started without this verse coming into the forefront of a husband and wife’s mind. “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” May God always be the beginning and the center of our homes.
Prayer:
Lord, be the center of our lives, the center of our marriages, the center of our families. Be the center of our church family as well. Because unless You build our house Lord, we labor in vain. We give it all to You Jesus, Amen!
