Grace Upon Grace
John 1:14, 16 ESV
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”
What is this, “grace upon grace”? First, grace is best described as an exoneration, being pardoned when we did not deserve to be pardoned, or pardoned even though we know that we are guilty. This grace of God, because of the sacrifice at Calvary by God’s own Son, Jesus, implies a constant, overflowing gift.
John 3:16 specifies that God acted out of His love for us by sending His Son to keep us from dying in our own sins. As children of God, we are not just rescued, we’re pardoned, forgiven and all our sins forgotten, never to be remembered again. Who does that? Only God!
Grace upon grace is like stacking up the grace for us, and no one is keeping count, or keeping score of all the times we have been forgiven. If we need grace today, we got it. If we need grace tomorrow, we got it. If we need grace twenty, thirty, forty times this month, we will get it.
Why would God do that? He is not enabling us; He is pardoning us to get us where we will not continuously sin against Him. It is like getting a second, third, fourth…endless chances to get it right.
Prayer:
God, I can never thank You enough for giving me more chances than I deserve, but that is why there is grace. I do not deserve grace, I cannot earn grace, it is given to me because I am one of Your children. Thank You Father God, Amen!
