Jesus the Light of the World
John8:12 ESV
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus speaks very plainly in this passage about who He is and what He can and has done for billions of people around the world. Jesus is the exclusive source of spiritual light. No other source of spiritual truth is available to mankind.
Jesus is speaking of the light of His Truth, the light of His Word, the light of eternal Life. Those who perceive the true Light will never walk in spiritual darkness.
John 1:4-8 says, “In Him (Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.”
In order for us not to walk in spiritual darkness (a sinful life) we have to have the light within us. When you walk in a dark room you can turn on the light and it will illuminate the room and no more darkness. When we have the Light living in us we carry with us a spiritual light that we can expose the deeds of darkness.
Matthew 5:14-16 says that it is not enough just to have the Light of Jesus within us, we must also bear witness of the Light. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 ESV
Prayer:
Father, the Light of Jesus lives inside of me and that Light wants to get outside as well. Help me to open up my heart and let the Light shine that all may see Jesus and come to know Him as well.
