The Day of the Lord’s Return
1 Thessalonians 5:1-5 ESV
“Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
As children, we were often warned in church of the day of the Lord that it would come as a thief in the night, and it frightened us, and we wanted to be sure we were ready. Never once do I remember them carrying on and stating verse four that as children of the light we will not be surprised of the day of the Lord, but instead we are eagerly expecting the day of the Lord.
Let me tell you plainly this morning, yes, the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, unexpectantly and without warning to those who do not know Jesus as Lord and Savior.
There is no other way to get to heaven but through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Redeemer, Savior and Lord. To confess our sins, to accept the virgin birth of Jesus and to believe that He died and rose again to bring us back into right relationship with God. Once again, there is no other way to heaven but through Jesus Christ.
When we have Jesus as Lord and Savior and walk with Him, we expect the day of the Lord’s return, we desire His return, we will not be caught off guard.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for saving us, redeeming us, for delivering and healing us, and for bringing us in right relationship with You. We will not fear the day of Your return, but we expect the day of Your return and desire it with our whole heart. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
