A Helper
John 14:16-17 ESV
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
(1) These disciples already believed in God, then Jesus came to shed light on who God really is because they did not have the proper understanding of God.
(2) Jesus comes in and fills in all the gaps of their understanding. (At this point they still are as clueless as one can get but it will all make sense to them soon enough). Jesus came in a did a perfect job of representing the Father for who He is, He manifested a perfect work, then suffered and died for everyone for all times.
(3) When Jesus went back to the Father, He sends the Holy Spirit back to be with the Disciples. But He doesn’t stop there. When the Holy Spirit comes, He dwells inside the believer, not just with the believer. Then He does a perfect work by bringing into remembrance all the things that Jesus said and did.
These Gospels were not written at the time they were happening, they were written after the fact, later on. The Holy Spirit worked through all the writers of the Bible to bring us the Word’s of God and the Words of God through Jesus.
That very same Holy Spirit lives in us. Reminding us, rehearsing to us His words and actions. The Holy Spirit is our Helper this morning and all through the day and evening. He prompts us to do what we are supposed to be doing, and He enables us and empowers us to do the works of Jesus and greater works according to Jesus.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your love and works and for sending us Your Helper. This Helper never sleeps, never slumbers but He empowers us to run and not be weary, to walk and not faint. Thank You for the Holy Spirit that dwells in all of us who believe. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
