Spiritual Needs

John 6:27-28 ESV

“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”

The back story to this scripture is that thousands of people have been seeking for Jesus and following Him wherever He goes. He knew that their thoughts and actions were for someone to take care of them and provide for their needs. These were desperate times and times were tough.

They had just eaten bread and fish to their fill, and they were thrilled to see the miracles of Jesus, but it did not make them believe that He was the Messiah. They followed Him across the sea of Galilee to see Him again and perhaps to be fed again and witness His miracles.

Jesus knew to them it was no more than a dinner and a side show, so, He said to them, “Do not work (or strive, desire) for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.” Jesus was speaking to their spirits; they were only thinking “what can this man do for me to meet my needs?”

Then they asked Jesus, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” It sounds like they are on the right track, when actually they were wondering, “what will it cost me to believe, and to follow after God and do what God wants me to do?”

What is the meaning of this conversation for us? Don’t worry, strive after, be deeply concerned about the next meal. Instead, we must put our trust in Jesus spiritually, believing when we get in tune with Him, He will provide for our spirit first and our provisions next. When we trust in Him, lean on Him, walk with Him, He will provide, He always has and always will.

David said in Psalms 37:25; “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.” Why? Because when we get our hearts, minds and spirits in line with Him, He always provides.

Prayer:

Lord, let me look beyond what my flesh wants and seek after What Your Spirit is saying to me, where Your Spirit is leading me. Let my eyes get beyond the cravings of the flesh, let my spiritual eyes crave for the things of God. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
