Security
John 6:39-40a ESV
“And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life…”
All my life I have heard the reference that “once saved, always saved,” or “eternal security,” was not a concept to hold on to. The Pentecostal church strongly believed that we could lose our salvation that “backsliding” was a thing, and we could be separate us from God.
I will make this as simple as I can from the scripture standpoint. Jesus said in John 6:37 “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” In today’s passage, John 6:38, Jesus says, “And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me…” and “…this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life…”
So, to address the once saved always saved issue, we cannot look to Jesus and believe in a way that we think is good enough. We can not say a few words, try to live a morally acceptable life, and maybe have a conversation with God once in a while. Also, we can not acknowledge Him to other people once in a while, that will not work. Good enough is not good enough.
So, what is Jesus looking for in us? To believe beyond what we can see, know or think. To consecrate our lives to God. To talk to Him every day and listen to Him every day. To do His will completely above our own will. To search His word for all of our questions and needs. To believe that Jesus is who He says He is and allow Him to take precedence in our lives.
If we: draw near to God by His Spirit, confess our sins to Him, believe in everything He said and did, accept His forgiveness, confess that he is Lord of our lives, are baptized and made alive through Him, walk with Him and talk with Him and seek His face for all of life’s situations always, Jesus puts on us the seal of the Holy Spirit. We are then reserved to be with Him forever in this life and the life to come. Then we can stand on these promises from our Lord that we will be with Him forever.
Prayer:
Lord, I give my life to You. I do not trust in manmade interpretations to find a loophole to see Your glory. A relationship is what You desire, I want this relationship to grow stronger every day, not just so I can get into heaven but so I can have Your blessings in this life and the life to come. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
