Preparing our minds for action is to make a conscious choice to get our mental state fully in line with the Spirit of God. The Spirit is always moving, never idle or fragmented. The Spirit of God is always ready to move in the will of God.

Peter wants us to be ready to move in the perfect will of God. To be sober minded is to think clearly, test the spirits, see what truly is the will of God and not rely on our own mind to think of solutions. To be sober minded is to think and weigh out our next move using what is available to us: God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Bible.
