Hope from the Scriptures
Romans 15:4 ESV
“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
At one time I was teaching a Bible study after hours at a place of business. One afternoon I was expounding on a scripture that was instructions of how we can be blessed, when a guest that joined the Bible study spoke up. He said, that we could not claim this particular scripture as a promise to ourselves, this scripture was only written by Paul to the recipient and not to anyone else.
I was quite appalled at the remarks, and I asked him, “so, should we rip out this page of our Bible?” His response to me was that we can read and understand what Paul was telling them to do, but that was for them back then and not for ourselves.
That is completely opposite of what our passage today is saying. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
All scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16 ESV). Today, believe in the promises of God, and receive the promises of God.
Prayer:
Lord, we know all Your Words were written for our example. You gave Your Words through writers that were inspired by the Holy Spirit. Your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our pathway, and by Your words we are informed and in keeping Your Words there is a great reward. (2Peter 1:20, Psalms 119:105, Psalms 19:11). By Your grace Lord, lead us through Your Words, Amen!
