Luke 11:1 ESV
“Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “’Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”’
Even though man has been praying for thousands of years, a disciple of Jesus asks the best question, what is the inside scoop of how to pray effectively? Prayer is more than just communicating with God when you communicate with a Holy God it requires submitting to the will of God.
This was Jesus model prayer, what we call the Lord’s Prayer: First, Jesus says we must enter into Praise and worship. Our Father in heaven hallowed be Your name (may I always keep Your name Holy).
Second, we must seek first the kingdom of God and ask for God’s perfect will. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done (in me).
Third, we ask for what we need, understand, we just prayed God’s will be done. But James says, “you have not because you ask not.” (James 4:2)
Fourth, asking God for forgiveness but on the contingency of how we forgive. “Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.”
Fifth, pray for God’s divine protection. We ask Him to guide us away from the things that will make us stumble and potentially sin. “And don’t let us yield to temptation…”
Sixth we ask for God’s authority as the Sovereign God to overcome the evil that would destroy us. “But rescue us from the evil one.”
As the prayer ends, each prayer should lead us back to praise. “For Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.” (Not found in all manuscripts)
Prayer:
Father, you kingdom come in me, your will be done in me, my loved ones and friends and in the 2-1/2 billion Christians around the world today.
